Book Cover Project Process

The Project

For this project, I was tasked with designing a book cover for any book under public domain. When looking at a list of public domain books, I saw Little Women by Louisa M. Alcott. I had recently watched the movie adaptation of the book and decided to move forward with designing the book cover for Little Women!

First concepts

When I started on this project, I had a few different ideas for the design of the cover. I started off by putting pencil to paper and sketching out my ideas. My sketches tend to be quite rough and I find that my designs are far more polished once I get into Illustrator.

First draft

When I first got into Illustrator, I began on working on my favorite design from my sketches. The design included Louisa M. Alcott’s real life home and the four “little women” from the book. Although I did really like this design, I found that I wasn’t totally happy with it.

Back to the drawing board…

Now that I decided to scrap my first design, it was time to come up with a new one. It was December when I began working on this project and I became heavily inspired by snow and wanted a “winterwonderlandesque” landscape for my design. I wanted to use light, bright, pastel colors in my design as well. I also really wanted to keep Louisa M. Alcott’s house in the design and wanted to find a way to incorporate it somehow.
